By the early 1800s, American lighthouses used Argand lamps. Air coming from the base of this lamp made the light brighter. With the addition of a ref

25、lector, the Argand lamp became standard in American lighthouses until the 1850s. Ships fifteen miles away could see the light on a clear night. In 1819, the French government asked scientist Augustin-Jean Fresnel to work on directing more light toward ships. Fresnel, who studied prisms (棱镜), began w

26、orking on a special lens (透镜) that used many prisms. Fresnel was able to send 80 percent of the light, so ships could see the light from twenty miles away! The new lens was named the Fresnel lens. America began to use the new lens in the 1850s. Over the years, sources of light continued to change. B
