Part I
Dear Sir or Madam:
I’m happy that the 50 printers we ordered have arrived on time. But it is a great pity that we find one printer has been damaged.
We tried to fix it well, but we failed. You know it is the busiest season for our company. Lack of printer will bring great inconvenience to our normal work in our company. And even worse, it can cause loss of benefits for our company.
Our two companies have kept good relationships for several years, I hope we can settle it down successfully after mutual discussion.
Would you please let me know whether or not you can send a repairman as soon as possible? Or you may replace the wrong one with a proper one. I hope that my problem will get your kind consideration.
Yours faithfully
Zhang Chang
Part II
The chart shows the number of the students studying abroad and students returning to the homeland in China between 1993 and 2003. In 1993, the number of the students studying abroad reached 10,000. However, only one-fifth of them, about 2,000 students, returned to the homeland. Ten years later, there was a great increase in this number which hit 60,000, six times than the number in 1993. On the other hand, the number of students returning to homeland also rose from 2,000 in 1993 to 40,000 in 2003. This number takes up about 67% in the number of students studying abroad.
Through the chart, we can see that more and more students choose to study abroad in recent years, and this situation will continue for quite a long time. With the number of students studying abroad arose, it can be predicted that more and more students return to the homeland. In 1993, not many people can go to university to study and the number of students studying abroad is fewer because of the poor economic conditions. Those who successfully went abroad would not return since they can enjoy better life in foreign countries. Things are quite different now, with the quick economic development of China, more and more students studying abroad have been attracted to return to China, and they can have more opportunities to develop themselves here in their homeland.

Part I
Current Situation of College Graduates Annual Income
The line chart illustrates the average annual income (in RMB) for both male and female college graduates during the period of their first working year from 2004 to 2008 in China.
For the income of male, the number rises from 12,000 in 2004 to more than 14,000 in 2005, whereas it slightly drops to around 13,000 in 2006. From the year 2006 to 2007, the annual income increased sharply from 13,000 to 18,000. However the number drops to 16,500 in the year 2008.
The income of female goes all the way up from 2004 to 2007. To be more specific, the number increased from 11,500 in 2004 to under 14,000 in 2005 and it enjoys a slight rise around 14,000 from 2005 to 2006. The number rises comparatively sharply from 14,000 to 17,000 from 2006 to 2007. In the year 2008, the number drops to 16,000, with a decrease of 1,000.
Although there is indeed gender discrimination in some particular jobs, it’s much better than before. Today male and female workers almost enjoy the same rights. And with the country’s economic conditions, the income would swing doubtlessly.
Part II
Better Behavior, Better Image
Years ago, a Taiwan author Bo Yang wrote a book on the behaviors of Chinese people, which is called “The Ugly Chinese ”. In this controversial work, B and o Yang’s brutal pen pointed straightly to the shortcomings of Chinese people: shallow insights and hence crude behaviors. Although his words are critical and serious, I believe his heart is warm in terms of the hope for an improvement and love for Chinese people.
We do need to change. There is always a motivation. As Singapore, the garden city, has complained against Chinese individuals’ bad habits, we all feel ashamed. To set up a better image towards people all around the world, it is of vital importance to change, several principle measures should be taken.
Education should be in the first place. As a saying goes: Rome wasn’t built in one day, which is true with the forming of good habits. When children start being educated, they should not only acquire academic knowledge but also learn how to behave properly in order to gain popularity. So teachers are responsible to guide to form better behavior. It’s not easy for a person who has been taught to behave better and doing so for dozens of years to be ill-behaved when being abroad.
In the second place, better habits should be advocated nationwide. The administrations should use media such as TV, internet and newspapers to call on people to pay attention to behaviors. Only when people are advised to do so from time to time, can their consciousness of social responsibility be waken.
Last but not least, every one should keep in mind that you are expected to behave properly before you gain better image and respect from others. Especially when being in other countries as a representative of our nation, show the best of yourself, show the civilization that has been prosperous for more than 5,000 years!

Proposal on cuts to promotion budgets next year
Introduction:
His is a proposal deals with possible cuts to promotion budgets next year.
Proceedings:
This proposal is based on the research on the conditions of our company conducted last month.
Findings:
After the research I suggest cut the promotion budgets for the following reasons:
With the expansion of our company, we need to employ some employees next year. As a consequence, some budgets on the budgets for the wages of the new employees has to be made.
The economic crisis stroke our business at the beginning of last year and we haven’t gone over the effect of it completely. The profits we have gained till now have not surpassed the state before the crisis. If we still invest much money in promotion, finical problems will arise in our company before long.
In order to catch up with the trend of the latest technology, some innovations have to be made in the research and development process. It is estimated that the budgets on the research and development should be increased by 40 percent so as to accomplishment of innovation.
According to the statistics, the budgets on promotion takes an account of 52% of our total budgets, which has been the largest investment of our company.
Conclusions:
Based on the above findings, we need to cut the promotion budgets in order to maintain the sustainable development of our company.
Recommendations
The time of the ads on TV should be cut by 60%. Meanwhile, in order to be recognized by our potential customers, we would like to take advantage of the platform of the Internet on which the ads are of impact and inexpensive as well.
Remarks from the judges: Organized and well written, but you could expand your recommendations.
Part III
Competition——Motivation Toward Development
We are inclined to realize that competitions are everywhere due to the rapid development of our society. Some people are against the competitions due to the fact that they are so fierce that they give too much pressure to anyone involved in them. But from my own perspective, I hold positive opinions on competitions, believing that they are motivations towards development. This is true for both countries and individuals.
Competition means opportunities. This is fully illustrated in the course of Shanghai World EXPO. This EXPO offers a countries and territories to learn and better understand each other. At the same time, it is a platform for each participant to show the best of themselves, thus it is also a competition. By knowing the latest development of science, technology, environment protection, sustainable development, one country can improve its own conditions by learning from others.
Competition also serves as an opportunity for individuals. Take myself as an example, participating in this competition is a process of self development.
Competition is the motivation towards development.
