2、safarmerinthatarea.mymothersnameisirmahill.sheisalsoafarmerandahousewife.mychildhoodwasoneofalotofhardworkandnotmuchmoney,butitwasoneofsolidfamilyaffection,asrepresentedbymyparents.iwasrearedinareligiousatmosphereinthebaptistfaith,andihavebeenamemberoftheantiochbaptistchurchintulsa,oklahoma,since198
3、3.itisaverywarmpartofmylifeatthepresenttime.formyundergraduatework,iwenttooklahomastateuniversityandgraduatedfromtherein1977.iamattachingtothisstatementacopyofmyresumeforfurtherdetailsofmyeducation.igraduatedfromtheuniversitywithacademichonorsandproceededtotheyalelawschool,whereireceivedmyjddegreein
4、1980.upongraduationfromlawschool,ibecameapracticinglawyerwiththewashington,dc,firmofward,hardraker,andross.in1981,iwasintroducedtonowjudgethomasbyamutualfriend.judgethomastoldmethathewasanticipatingapoliticalappointment,andheaskedifiwouldbeinterestedinworkingwithhim.hewas,infact,appointedasassistant
5、secretaryofeducationforcivilrights.afterhehadtakenthatpost,heaskedifiwouldbecomehisassistant,andiacceptedthatposition.inmyearlyperiodthere,ihadtwomajorprojects.thefirstwasanarticleiwroteforjudgethomassignatureontheeducationofminoritystudents.thesecondwastheorganizationofaseminaronhigh-riskstudentswh
6、ichwasabandonedbecausejudgethomastransferredtotheeeocwherehebecamethechairmanofthatoffice.duringthisperiodatthedepartmentofeducation,myworkingrelationshipwithjudgethomaswaspositive.ihadagooddealofresponsibilityandindependence.ithoughtherespectedmyworkandthathetrustedmyjudgment.afterapproximatelythre
7、emonthsofworkingthere,heaskedmetogooutsociallywithhim.whathappenednextandtellingtheworldaboutitarethetwomostdifficultthings-experiencesofmylife.itisonlyafteragreatdealofagonizingconsiderationandsleeplessnumber-agreatnumberofsleeplessnightsthatiamabletotalkoftheseunpleasantmatterstoanyonebutmyclosefr
8、iends.ideclinedtheinvitationtogooutsociallywithhimandexplainedtohimthatithoughtitwouldjeopardizewhatatthetimeiconsideredtobeaverygoodworkingrelationship.ihadanormalsociallifewithothermenoutsideoftheoffice.ibelievedthen,asnow,thathavingasocialrelationshipwithapersonwhowassupervisingmyworkwouldbeill-a
9、dvised.iwasveryuncomfortablewiththeideaandtoldhimso.ithoughtthatbysayingnoandexplainingmyreasonsmyemployerwouldabandonhissocialsuggestions.however,tomyregret,inthefollowingfewweeks,hecontinuedtoaskmeoutonseveraloccasions.hepressedmetojustifymyreasonsforsayingnotohim.theseincidentstookplaceinhisoffic
10、eormine.theywereintheformofprivateconversationswhichwouldnothavebeenoverheardbyanyoneelse.myworkingrelationshipbecameevenmorestrainedwhenjudgethomasbegantouseworksituationstodiscusssex.ontheseoccasions,hewouldcallmeintohisofficeforreportsoneducationissuesandprojects,orhemightsuggestthat,becauseofthe
11、timepressuresofhisschedule,wegotolunchtoagovernmentcafeteria.afterabriefdiscussionofwork,hewouldturntheconversationtoadiscussionofsexualmatters.hisconversationswereveryvivid.hespokeaboutactsthathehadseeninpornographicfilmsinvolvingsuchmattersaswomenhavingsexwithanimalsandfilmsshowinggroupsexorrapesc
12、enes.hetalkedaboutpornographicmaterialsdepictingindividualswithlargepenisesorlargebreastsinvolvedinvarioussexacts.onseveraloccasions,thomastoldmegraphicallyofhisownsexualprowess.becauseiwasextremelyuncomfortabletalkingaboutsexwithhimatallandparticularlyinsuchagraphicway,itoldhimthatididnotwanttotalk
13、aboutthesesubjects.iwouldalsotrytochangethesubjecttoeducationmattersortononsexualpersonalmatterssuchashisbackgroundorhisbeliefs.myeffortstochangethesubjectwererarelysuccessful.throughouttheperiodoftheseconversations,healsofromtimetotimeaskedmeforsocialengagements.myreactiontotheseconversationswastoa
14、voidthembyeliminatingopportunitiesforustoengageinextendedconversations.thiswasdifficultbecauseatthetimeiwashisonlyassistantattheofficeofeducation-orofficeforcivilrights.duringthelatterpartofmytimeatthedepartmentofeducation,thesocialpressuresandanyconversationofhisoffensivebehaviorended.ibeganbothtob
15、elieveandhopethatourworkingrelationshipcouldbeaproper,cordial,andprofessionalone.whenjudgethomaswasmadechairoftheeeoc,ineededtofacethequestionofwhethertogowithhim.iwasaskedtodoso,andidid.theworkitselfwasinteresting,andatthattimeitappearedthatthesexualovertureswhichhadsotroubledmehadended.ialsofacedt
16、herealisticfactthatihadnoalternativejob.whileimighthavegonebacktoprivatepractice,perhapsinmyoldfirmoratanother,iwasdedicatedtocivilrightswork,andmyfirstchoicewastobeinthatfield.moreover,thedepartmentofeducationitselfwasadubiousventure.presidentreaganwasseekingtoabolishtheentiredepartment.formyfirstm
17、onthsattheeeoc,whereicontinuedtobeanassistanttojudgethomas,therewerenosexualconversationsorovertures.however,duringthefallandwinterof1982,thesebeganagain.thecommentswererandomandrangedfrompressingmeaboutwhyididntgooutwithhimtoremarksaboutmypersonalappearance.irememberhissayingthatsomedayiwouldhaveto
18、tellhimtherealreasonthatiwouldntgooutwithhim.hebegantoshowdispleasureinhistoneandvoiceandhisdemeanorandhiscontinuedpressureforanexplanation.hecommentedonwhatiwaswearingintermsofwhetheritmadememoreorlesssexuallyattractive.theincidentsoccurredinhisinnerofficeattheeeoc.oneoftheoddestepisodesirememberwa
19、sanoccasioninwhichthomaswasdrinkingacokeinhisoffice.hegotupfromthetableatwhichwewereworking,wentovertohisdesktogetthecoke,lookedatthecanandasked,whohaspubichaironmycoke?onotheroccasions,hereferredtothesizeofhisownpenisasbeinglargerthannormal,andhealsospokeonsomeoccasionsofthepleasureshehadgiventowom
20、enwithoralsex.atthispoint,late1982,ibegantofeelseverestressonthejob.ibegantobeconcernedthatclarencethomasmighttakeouthisangerwithmebydegradingmeornotgivingmeimportantassignments.ialsothoughtthathemightfindanexcusefordismissingme.injanuaryof1983,ibeganlookingforanotherjob.iwashandicappedbecauseifeare
21、dthat,ifhefoundout,hemightmakeitdifficultformetofindotheremploymentandimightbedismissedfromthejobihad.anotherfactorthatmademysearchmoredifficultwasthattherewasaperiod-thiswasduringaperiodofahiringfreezeinthegovernment.infebruaryof1983,iwashospitalizedforfivedaysonanemergencybasisforacutestomachpainw
22、hichiattributedtostressonthejob.onceoutofthehospital,ibecamemorecommittedtofindotheremploymentandsoughtfurthertominimizemycontactwiththomas.thisbecameeasierwhenallisonduncan(sp)becameofficedirector,becausemostofmyworkwasthenfunneledthroughherandihadcontactwithclarencethomasmostlyinstaffmeetings.inth
23、espringof1983,anopportunitytoteachatoralrobertsuniversityopenedup.iparticipatedinaseminar-taughtanafternoonsessionandseminaratoralrobertsuniversity.thedeanoftheuniversitysawmeteachingandinquiredastowhetheriwouldbeinterestedinfurthering-pursuingacareerinteaching,beginningatoralrobertsuniversity.iagre
24、edtotakethejobinlargepartbecauseofmydesiretoescapethepressuresifeltattheeeocduetojudgethomas.wheniinformedhimthatiwasleavinginjuly,irecallthathisresponsewasthatnowiwouldnolongerhaveanexcusefornotgoingoutwithhim.itoldhimthatistillpreferrednottodoso.atsometimeafterthatmeeting,heaskedifhecouldtakemetod
25、innerattheendoftheterm.whenideclined,heassuredmethatthedinnerwasaprofessionalcourtesyonlyandnotasocialinvitation.ireluctantlyagreedtoacceptthatinvitation,butonlyifitwasattheeveryendofaworkingday.on,asirecall,thelastdayofmyemploymentattheeeocinthesummerof1983,ididhavedinnerwithclarencethomas.wewentdi
26、rectlyfromworktoarestaurantneartheoffice.wetalkedabouttheworkihaddone,bothateducationandattheeeoc.hetoldmethathewaspleasedwithallofitexceptforanarticleandspeechthatihaddoneforhimwhilewewereattheofficeforcivilrights.finally,hemadeacommentthatiwillvividlyremember.hesaidthatifievertoldanyoneofhisbehavi
