、nd down in front of the camp. He could hear shouting in the camp itself. Lights were blazing and men were running here and there: they had just discovered that a prisoner had escaped. At that moment, a large black car with four officers inside it, stopped at the camp gates. The officers got out and

、the prisoner stood to attention and saluted as they passed. When they had gone, the driver of the car came towards him. The man obviously wanted to talk. He was rather elderly with grey hair and clear blue eyes. The prisoner felt sorry for him, but there was nothing else he could do. As the man came

Then, jumping into the car, he drove off as quickly as he could.

、s rather elderly with grey hair and clear blue eyes.fairly, quite, rather, very, pretty用法区分一、含义上的区分这几个副词都可表示程度,fairly 语气最轻,尽管常常与褒义词连用,但由于语气较弱,往往不带明显的恭维或赞许,通常译为“还算”、“相当”相当 fairly good,指的可能是还牵强过得去,只是没有否定。

如:She looked rather quite nervous. Its a rather quite interesting book. She looked rather quite disappointed about it.

如:Its rather warmer today. This one is rather too large. The exercise was rather too difficult.

I quite agree with you. We rather like the book. Its quite rather a good idea. =Its a quite ra

、ther good idea. It was quite rather a success. The news gave us rather quite a shock. Its rather quite a shame that he missed the concert. 如:Youre quite right (wrong). Thats quite impossible.
