2、atestothesouthandnorthwestisthelongestintheworld.CanadaoccupiesamajornorthernportionofNorthAmerica,sharingthelandborderswiththecontiguousUnitedStatestothesouthandtheU.S.stateofAlaskatothenorthwest,stretchingfromtheAtlanticOceanintheeasttothePacificOceaninthewest;tothenorthliestheArcticOcean.Bytotala
3、rea(includingitswaters),Canadaisthesecond-largestcountryintheworld,afterRussia.Bylandarea,Canadaranksfourth.Canadahasonethirdoftheworldssupplyoffreshwater.Therearefivegreatlakesinthesouth,andtherearemanyothers,especiallyinthenorth.Mostoftheelectricityisproducedbywater.Thecountryhasagreatdealofcoal,o
4、ilandnaturalgas,andtheseareallexploitedforenergy.Muchofthecountryiscoveredbyforests,andwoodiscutandsoldallovertheworld.Canadaisalsotheworldsbiggestproducerofthekindofpaperwhichisusedfornewspapers.FishingisalsoveryimportantforCanadians.Fishfromeastandwestcoastsissoldtomanyothercountries.About40%ofthe
5、CanadianpopulationareofBritishdescent,while27%areofFrenchorigin.Another20%areofotherEuropeanbackground,about10%areAsianorigin,andsome3%areofaboriginalorMtis(mixedaboriginalandEuropean)background.Canadaisafederationoftenprovinces(Alberta,BritishColumbia,Manitoba,NewBrunswick,NewfoundlandandLabrador,N
6、ovaScotia,Ontario,PrinceEdwardIsland,Quebec,andSaskatchewan)andthreeterritories(NorthwestTerritories,Yukon,andNunavut).ItisgovernedasaparliamentarydemocracyandaconstitutionalmonarchywithQueenElizabethIIasitsheadofstate.Oneoftheworldshighlydevelopedcountries,Canadahasadiversifiedeconomythatisreliantu
