2、spass.“NoothermanufacturerintheworldhasproducedaspowerfullongwallroofsupportsthanhasJoyMiningMachinery,saidCliveHibbert,ProductDirector-PoweredRoofSupportsandArmoredFaceConveyors.“Joyhasalonghistoryofmanufac-turingroofsupportsandothercompo-nentsoflongwallsystems.In1996,Joynotonlybecamethefirstsingle
3、-manu-facturerofcompletelongwallminingsystemswiththeacquisitionofLongwallInternational,italsoacquiredLongwallsexpertiseinmanufacturingroofsupports,whichgoesbackto1950.SincetheacquisitionofLongwallInternational,thereneverhasbeenarecordedmajorfailureinvolvingJOYroofsupportsHibbertsaid.Hibbertcreditsse
4、veralfactorsforJoyssuccess.“Firstisoperationalexperience.JOYlongwallroofsupportsareinvolvedinmorethan60%oftheactivelongwallminingfacescurrentlyinoperationinAustraliaandmorethanhalfofallthoseintheUnitedStates,andheadded,“completeJOYlongwallminingsystemscomprisemorethan70%ofthesingle-manufacturerlongw
5、allsoperatingtoday.“Muchofthissuccesshastobeattributedtoourengineeringteam,hecontinued.“Joyhasalargenumberofdegreedengineersworldwideinvolvedinthedesignandmanufactureoflong-wallminingequipment.“Theseengineers,usingadvancedanalyticaltools,consistentlyproduceexceptionaldesigns.Theydemandtheuseofhighst
6、rengthsteelsandincorpo-ratetheirown-designedadvancedhydraulics,whichresultsinthehighperformanceofoursupportsHibbertnoted.“Joyrequiresthateachcompo-nentineverypieceofminingequip-mentmeetsthehighestofstandards.Forexample,everyroofsupportstruc-turemanufacturedisinspectedbyJoypersonneltoensuredetailedpr
7、ocessesintheweldingareadheredtoforthepurposethathighqualityandintegrityaremaintained.“Finally,whenyouhavedesignedandmanufacturedthestrongestroofsup-ports,youhavetoprovetheproductaddsvalue,Hibbertsaid.“Asamatterofroutine,Joymaintainsthemoststrin-gentstructuraltestingintheindustrythatisappliedtoourlon
8、gwallroofsup-ports.AtthecompaniesWigan,UnitedKingdom,testinglaboratory,Joyhasthecapacitytotestunitsuptoaratingof2500tonne(2755ton)onroofsup-portsrangingupto6metres(20feet)inheight.Thisisthehighestratedrigcapabilityintheworldtoday,andJoyputittousetwoyearsagotovalidateourdesignoftheworldsmostpowerfull
9、ongwallroofsupport.JoyhadbeenaskedbyAustraliasMoranbahNorthMinetoprovideacompletelongwallminingsolutionincorporatingthehighestcapacitylongwallroofsupportswithanever-before-achievedshieldyieldratingsofatleast1750tonnes(1930tons).“Accomplishingthisrequiredaded-icatedeffort,Hibbertsaid.“Wheretyp-icalsh
10、ieldfatiguetestingrequirementsrangebetween30,000and60,000cycles,thefinalfatiguecheckingontheMoranbahshieldssuccessfullyachieved90,000cycles;somethingunheardofintheindustry,untilJoydidit.Hibbertaddedthat,becauseleglifeexpectancyisdesignedtoexceedthatofthemajorsupportstructures,thelegsalsoweretestedsu
11、ccessfullyformorethan90,000convergencecycles.Joyalsoincreasedthelegdiameterfrom400mm(16inches)to480mm(19inches)which,hesaid,involvedinnova-tiveengineeringinthedesignofthecylinders,seals,bearingmaterialsandfeedpipes.“Additionally,Hibbertsaid,“Joydesignedintothenewroofsupportsanactivecompensatingramth
12、atstabi-lizesthehingepointbetweenthecanopyandtherearoftheshield.ThiswasdonebecauseJoyengineershaddeterminedthat,bybothincreasingthesizeoftheramandbyactivatingitattimesotherthanjustduringshieldadvance,itenhancesthetiploadingofthesupportsduringbothfreestandingandyieldconditions.“Theendresultoftheseacc
13、omplish-ments,hecontinued,“isJoyshighestrated,highestfatiguelifelongwallroofsupportthatweighsmorethantwicethatofmanyofthesupportsinusetoday.Thatsameeffort,theengineeringattentiontodetailandinnovativethink-ing,goesintothedesignandmanufac-tureofeveryJOYlongwallroofsupport.“Ashasbeenprovenagainandagain
