4、itsproductioninthefirstplace.Scholarsallaroundtheworldcameupwiththeoriesandmethodsfromdifferentperspectives.However,withtherapiddevelopmentofsociety,technologyandthemassmedia,thesimpletextscannotsatisfytheneedsofreaders.Manyothermultimodalmodeslikeimages,colors,soundsandactionscomeintoexisttoexpress
5、meaning.Lim(2004,P.52)saidthatweliveinamultimodalsociety.Thus,itisnecessarytochangefrommonomodalitytomultimodality.Socialsemiologistsarguethatexceptlanguage,othersemioticsystemsarealsothesourceofmeaning.Multimodalityreferstothevariouswaysinwhichanumberofdistinctsemioticresourcesystemsarebothco-deplo
6、yedandco-contextualizedinthemakingofatext-specificmeaning(BaldryThibauIt,2006,P.21).Multimodaldiscourseanalysisaimstoexplorethecorrelationandintegrationoftherepresentational,interactiveandtextualmeaningsrealizedbydifferentsemioticresources.Peoplegraduallyrealizetheimportanceofmultimodaldiscourse,and
7、categorizeitasaseparateacademicfieldtocarryoutresearch.1.2ResearchPurposeandSignificanceWinterOlympicemblemsconsistofimages,words,colors,etc.whicharetypicalmultimodaldiscoursesaccordingtoKressandVanLeeuwensVisualGrammar(VG)(1996,2006).ThisstudychoosesWinterOlympicemblemsasobjectsofmultimodaldiscours
8、eanalysisandaimstoputforwardamodelfortheanalysisoftheseemblems.Ithopestoshedfurtherlightontheresearchofmultimodaldiscourseanalysis.Wecandiscussthesignificanceofthisstudyfromthetheoreticalperspectiveandthepracticalperspective.Intermsoftheoreticalsignificance,whatshouldbetakenintoconsiderationfirstisK
9、ressandVanLeeuwen.ThisstudycouldexpandthedefinitionofdiscourseandenrichourcomprehensiononMDAbyintegratinglanguageandothermeaningresources.Second,throughtheresearchprocess,wecouldverifythefeasibilityandpracticabilityofapplyingVisualGrammarintoappreciatingthemeaningofWinterOlympicemblems.Third,byinter
10、pretingtherelationshipbetweenlanguageandothermodalityforms,thisstudyprovidessupportforthefuturestudyondiscourseanalysisofemblems.Asforthepracticalsignificance,byintegratingvarioussocialsemioticsincludingimages,colorsandwords,thisresearchprovidesanewangleforinterpretingthedesignofemblems.Itcouldhelpr
11、eadersbetterunderstandthesocialmeaningsandfunctionsoflanguageaswellasmultimodalmodes.Inaddition,theproposalofthemodel,suitableforthemultimodaldiscourseanalysisofemblems,providesamorecomprehensiveperspectiveofappreciatingemblemsbyanalyzingtheintegratedeffectsofdifferentmodalities.2CHAPTERTWOliteratur

13、lbemade.2.1MultimodalityThedevelopmentofmonomodalitycannolongersatisfytheneedsanddemandsofmassmediaandaudiences.Itisreplacedbysemioticssuchasimages,colors,soundsetc.Thenmultimodalitycomesintoexistandgrowsrapidly.Thehigh-techproductsareeffectivetoolsforthespreadingandexpressingofmultimodality.Theterm
14、multimodalityisputforwardbyVanLeeuwenandJewittinHandbookofVisualAnalysisin2001anditunderlinestheimportanceofconsideringsemioticssuchaslanguage,color,imageandsound.Itiswidelydiscussedbywesternlinguists.Forthedefinitionofmultimodality,manyresearchershavegivendifferentopinions.Herearesomedefinitions.Va
15、nLeeuwen(2005,p.281)definesmultimodalityinhisIntroducingSocialSemioticsasmultimodalitymeansthecombinationofdifferentsemioticmodes-forexample,languageandmusic-inacommunicativeartifactorevent.Multimodality,inthemindofScollonandLevine(2004),referstothemultimodalitiesusedinthecommunicationsuchascolor,ta
16、ste,speechandimage.Multimodalityreferstothediversewaysinwhichanumberofdistinctsemioticresourcesystemsarebothco-deployedandco-contextualizedinthemakingoftext-specificmeaning.(BaldryThibault,2006,p.21)Machin(2007)describesmultimodalityasthegrammarofvisualcommunicationthatisusedbyimagedesigners.2.2Mult
17、imodalDiscourseAnalysisOnlybylanguage,whatisexpressedmaynotbeunderstoodcomprehensively.Inthissense,communicationshouldbeachievedbyseveralsensesofhearing,seeingandfeeling.Avarietyofmeansandsymbolsareinvolvedtoexchangeinformationandexpressmeaning.Ifreaderswanttoknowhowthesesemioticsincludinglanguagear
18、ecombinedtoexpressmeaningsandintentions,multimodaldiscourseanalysisisneededinthissituation.TwostandardsareputforwardbyZhuYongshengin2007.Theyaimtodifferentiatemultimodaldiscoursefrommonomodaldiscourse.Thefirstoneishowmanykindsofmodalitiesareinvolved.Thisisageneralprincipleinlinguisticfield.2116Monom
