The novel is one of the most popular books of all time, selling more than 30 million copies (see list of
2、best-selling books). An American film adaptation, released in 1939, became the highest-grossing film in the history of Hollywood, and received a record-breaking ten Academy Awards. Overview lScarlett OHara is the daughter of an Irish immigrant who in 1861 owns a plantation named Tara in Georgia. Sca
3、rlett is infatuated with Ashley Wilkes, who, although attracted to her, marries his cousin, Melanie Hamilton. At the party announcing Ashleys engagement to Melanie, Scarlett meets Rhett Butler, who has a reputation as a rogue. As the Civil War begins, Scarlett accepts a proposal of marriage from Mel
4、anies brother, Charles Hamilton, who soon dies of disease in training. Scarletts main concern regarding his death is that she must wear black and cannot attend parties. lAfter the war, Scarlett inherits Tara and manages to keep the place going. When Scarlett cannot get money from Rhett to pay the ta

6、lone. Remorseful after Franks death, Scarlett marries Rhett, who is aware of her passion for Ashley but hopes that one day she will come to love him instead.
