2、of human life, Dickens got a profound understanding of human-being, the surrounding environment and his life experiences while all his mature thinking and understanding were summarized into the book Great Expectations.The original meaning of the works title in fact is a heritage, but when it was tra
3、nslated into Chinese, it gave me an impreion that the title shows the hero of the story had great expectations. .A Summary of the Book Pip, the main hero, his parents died when he was a baby.He lives with his ill-tempered older sister who “brought him up by hand” and her strong but gentle husband, J
4、oe Gargery, who is a village blacksmith.Pip is satisfied with his life and his warm friends even though he is poor.One day, Pip encounters an escaped convict in the village.The man scares Pip into stealing food for him and threatens Pip not to tell anymore do as he says.It is the first time in Pips
5、life that he has felt truly guilty.A wealthy old spinster named Mi Havisham asks Pip to her home to play.The woman hasnt seen sunlight in years and claims to have a broken heart and just wants to see pip play cards with Estella, a beautiful young girl she has adopted.Estella is cruel to Pip, often c
6、alls him names and laughs at him.Pip thinks that he was taunted, and he does not want to be a common boy.He wishes that he would be different and marries the girl.He studies very hard even though it is impoible to surpa Estella.After years as companion to Mi Havisham and Estella, he spends more year
7、s as apprentice to Joe, so that he may grow up to have a livelihood working as a blacksmith.Later, his life is suddenly changed by a prominent lawyer, Mr.Jaggers, who is Mi Havishams lawyer as well.He tells Pip that he has inherited a large sum of money from an anonymous benefactor.The conditions re
8、quire him to leave for London immediately, and1 wants him become a gentleman in the upper cla.Pip originally believes that Mi Havisham is the source of his expectations and intends for pip to marry Estella.Pip accepts the sudden luck happily.In London, Pip learns to be a gentleman and learns more ab
9、out the upper cla even being an upper people.During this time, he returns to the village often.Estella had been studying abroad in Europe.When she returns, she apologizes for her earlier cruelty and warns him that he should not fall in love with her.Pip refuses to believe these words.At the same tim
10、e, Pips benefactor appears, Abel Magwitch, the convict whom Pip helped.He had eventually prospered and become extremely wealthy.Magwitch left all his money to Pip because he never forgot Pips kindne.Pip firstly cant accept the fact that his benefactor is a convict.Magwitch tells him the truth.The sp
11、inster was cheated of a large amount of money by her little brother Arthur and his fianc Compeyson.Later, the convict helped Compeyson kill Arthur to get the whole money and his wife gave birth to a girl.The lawyer protected his wife from being prison and sent the girl to Mi Havisham.In fact, Estell
12、a is the girl.Mi Havisham just wants to revenge according to her spiteful plans.In order to get rid of the spinsters control, Estella marries to a squire.The spinster later regrets and apologizes to pip.Pip accepts her apology.Pip recognizes that Magwitch is a good and noble man.He attempts to help
13、him escape, but instead he is captured and sent to jail.His wealth is forfeited by the crown.Due to Pips sickne, he is not arrested.During this illne, Pip is greatly saddened by this turn of events and realizes how thankle and grateful he had been over the years.He becomes the poor again.Many years
14、later, Pip meets Estella on the street.Her husband has died.They two exchange brief pleasantries and Pip doesnt have her in the end. .My Views on the Book After finishing reading this book, it is a little difficult for me to understand, but the form and content of this book are all outstanding.Great
15、 Expectations is written in first person.When readers read this book just as all the stories happen on us.The title Great Expectations refers to pips “Great Expectations”.The story is divided into three phases of Pips life expectations.When Pip was young, he wanted to be a blacksmith like his brothe
16、r-in-law.Later, his meeting with Mi Havisham changed his attitude towards life, and he admired he decent way of living like a gentleman.He met Estella and fell in love with her, but he cannot marry her because of his inferior status and his expectations changed.He wanted to raise his social status a
17、nd become a gentleman and then marry Estella.At last, Pip realized the money and social status is not the most important thing in life.What is important is love and loyalty.Mens true value has nothing to do with his money and status.The character in this masterpiece left me the deep impreion is Pip.
18、I think the writer describes the change of his characteristics very well.In the first part, he is innocent, kind, and generous.In the second part, he is snobbish, seeking for vanity and self conceited and a little greedy.In the third part, he is full of love and loyalty and he is a person with high
19、morality.It also reflects that environment change peoples mind.Different environment creates different people.Throughout this book, though their life was hard, Pip didnt wish to be a first cla person, and his vision was to be a blacksmith like his brother-in-law.The reason why he changed his mind an
20、d was eager to be a first cla person later was the changing of environmenthe met M i Havisham, Estella and some other complex peopleaccording to pip life, it tells us that we cannot compare with others.Do not feel envy at the others money.And if one day you become the rich, do not despise at your po
