15、at significance to the accomplishment of this paper. ABSTRACT The polysystem theory is a culture theory proposed by the Israel scholar, Itamar Even-Zohar in the 1970s. This theory overthrows the linguistic-based paradigm of translation stuides, which is source-language oriented and stresses faithful
16、ness and equivalence. It claims that translation studies should be placed in a historical and socio-cultural context and employs the systemic approach to describe the translation process, product and function in an objective way. The polysystem theory attempts to seek norms beyond the text, intepret
17、ing and anticipating the translational phenomena themselves, which reinforces the contextual function of target-language and explores a new domain for translation studies. Transalted literature and national literature of the May 4th Period interwine, influence, and promote each other and establish a
18、 rewarding interactive relationship. The interplay betwwen translated literature and national litearture is directly and specifically represented by the writer and translators literary translation and creation, while in the period of the May 4th, Lu Xun and Lin Yutang are the most outstanding repres
19、entatives among the numerous elites. Since the birth of polysystem theory, it has attracted extensive attention in the academic circles at home and abroad. The domestic academia has procured abundant achievements, yet the typical problem is that research concerning the applicability of the theory is
20、 far from sufficient. Opinions vary on whether the theory is applicable to study the specific period of Chinese translated literature history. In order to fill this research gap, the present research first and foremost proposes a hypothesis that Polysystem theory does have applicabilty to interpreti
21、ng the translated literature in the May 4th Period. Simultaneously, employing the descriptive approach of PST(PST is short for Polysystem theory in the whole thesis), the author depicts the impacts of translated lietarture upon national literature in the literary level. Besides, based on those viewp
22、oints of PST correlated with the dynamic relation of translated and national literature in the literary polysysytem, the author explores the relationship between the May 4th translated literature and the target-language literary polysystem, at the same time, there is an objective analysis of transla
23、tors startegies and slections of vm source-texts. In this way, the athuor aims to set up a model about the interactive realtionship of the May 4th translated literature and national literature and testifies the hypothesis proposed. The study reveals that PST has its applicabilty in intepreting the t
24、ranslated lietarture of a specific period as a whole under the historical, socio-cultural context yet it has little explanatory power on the interplay between individual translators literary translation and creation. The present research, theoretically, is of postive significance to the development
25、of Chinese translation theory along with broadening translation studies in the fields of literature, culture and history. 27、了新境界。五四时期的翻译文学与本土 文学相互影 响,相互促进,形成一种良性的互动关系。五四时期翻译文学与本土文学的互动, 最直接、最 具体的表现为文学家兼翻译家的文学翻译和文学创作的互动。文学家兼译者在其 中扮演的是中 介性角色,而鲁迅、林语堂则是众多五四精英中将二者集于一身的杰出代表。 多元系统论自问世以来,受到了国内外学术界的广泛关注。国内学术界对其研究取得了 丰 富的成果,但反映的突出问题是对该理论本身的适用性认识不足。针对该理论是否能够应 用于 中国翻译史上特定时期的研宄,众说纷纭,意见不一。为了弥补前人研宄的不足,本研 宄首先 提出多元系统论对于解释五四时期翻译文学具备适用性的假设。
28、再者,借鉴多元系统 论的描述 性研宄方法,对五四翻译文学对本土文学在文学层面的影响作客观描述。此外,依 据多元系统 论有关翻译文学与本土文学在文学多元系统中动态关系的观点,探宄五四时期翻 译文学与译入 语文学多元系统之间的关系,与此同时,对该时期译者的选材、翻译策略进行 客观分析。其目 的在于,建立五四时期翻译文学与本土文学的互动关系模式,依据此模式, 对五四两位巨匠一 鲁迅与林语堂先生的文学翻译与文学创作互动关系事实进行检验,以验证 多元系统论在解释中 国翻译文学特定历史时期上有关适用性的假设。研宄发现,多元系统论 在阐释宏观社会、历史 文化语境下特定时期翻译文学的整体面貌上具有适用性,但对

At the very outset, a description of the items relevant to the thesis is made and their mutual relationship is elaborated, and it is followed
38、 by an elucidation of the significance of the study. Additionally, the thesis is continued by a summarization of the aims, methodologies and prospective results. Eventually, there is a description of the structure of the thesis. 1.1 Description of the Thesis and Its Significance Since the dissertati
39、on attempts to reflect the applicability of PST from the specific perspective, the interplay between the May 4th translated literature and national literature, the description pertaining to this thesis encompasses three aspects: the delineation of the May 4th Period, the depict of the interactive re
40、lationship of translated literature and national literature, and an overview of the PST. Towards the delineation of the May 4th period, the Chinese academia adopts different criteria but mainly falls upon two categories. Some scholars claim that the launch of the May 4th patriotic movement in 1919 s
41、hould be regarded as the threshold of the May 4th Period. For instance, while compiling the translation history of American and British since the May 4th Period, the scholar Wang Jiankai takes 1919 as his starting point of elaboration. (Wang Jiankai, 2003: 1). In contrast, other scholars maintain that the beginning of the May 4th Period is marked by the May 4th literary revolution sponsored in the year 1917.
